Clinician: William Short, Principal Bassoonist of the Metropolitan Opera of New York

1:00pm to 4:00pm

What is a Soloist?

A Soloist will perform a pre determined portion of one of the etudes (for example, Etude 1, measures 1 to 16). They will be given a time slot and they will play for the clinician and receive a real-time, interactive critique in the Zoom venue (students and teachers will attend and observe). This is a great way to get ready for the all-region audition process.

What is an Auditor?

An Auditor attends the class, and does play, but only when the clinician has suggestions for everyone. The auditor will not play in front of others and will not have to perform a portion of the etudes publicly.

Which should my student do: soloist or auditor?

Does your student desire direct assistance on the music where they play in public and receive a critique and tips from the clinician?  Do they practice the music and they can prepare a portion of it to be ready on and perform (under tempo is OK). Then they should pick SOLOIST.

Is your student less experienced or has not had a lot of time to work on and prepare the all state music? Are they uncomfortable with the idea of playing in front of people and they do not want to do that? Would they prefer to learn from watching others and participate by playing with the group instead of as an individual? Then they should pick AUDITOR.

Get to the next level in your all-region performance to gain the edge you need to succeed from top players from around the country Late arrival / early departure is OK. Space is VERY limited for soloists.  Auditor versus soloist: Soloists will perform a selection of one etude for the class and receive a “public” lesson of about 15-20 minutes by the clinician.  Auditors will play when everyone plays, but do not play in front of the group by themselves. Most participants will be auditors, soloist spots are very limited and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.  All participants get to perform when the clinician has everyone play. Everyone should bring their instrument.
