This page talks about the reed-making classes that take place at the camps we run in the summer. They are one class in a full day of several kinds of classes and events. When are these classes? Middle School Reed Making
All rising 7th and 8th graders (and possibly rising 9th graders, depending on the location) go into the middle school reed class.
Middle School Reed-Making Overview – Bassoon
This is an introductory class that gives an overview of basic construction and basic reed adjustment and scraping techniques. All middle school bassoons will be put in this class.
What do we do in this class?
- Construct 3 reeds from GSP cane
- Get 2 blanks and learn basic adjustments / scraping
Suggested Tool Kit:
- Minimum Requirements Kit (Kit 3)
- Recommended Kit (Kit 1)
- Expanded Tool Kit (Kit 2)
- Or you can select Rental Kit if you don’t want to buy a kit
Middle School Reed-Making Overview – Oboe
This is an introductory class that gives an overview of basic construction and basic reed adjustment and scraping techniques. All middle school oboes will be put in this class.
What do we do in this class?
- Construct 3 reeds from fully bark cane and staples
- Get 2 cane blanks and learn basic adjustments / scraping

- Landwell Tool Kit (Kit 2)
- Or you can select Rental Kit if you don’t want to buy a kit
High School Reed Making
All non-ADRIT rising 10th through 12th graders will be in this class. Some rising 9th graders will be in this class, depending on the location.
High School Reed-Making Overview – Bassoon
This is a class that focuses on constructing and finishing reeds from beginning to end. All blanks are provided, and more time is spent on learning to use tools to scrape reeds after they are constructed. This is the most complex part of reed-making and it is a good opportunity to be immersed in this skill set.
What do we do in this class?
- Get 4 pieces of GSP and 1 blank and learn to form, scrape and adjust them

High School Reed-Making Overview – Oboe

ADRIT Reed Making
ADRIT Reed-Making Overview – Bassoon
This is the advanced ADRIT reed class for students enrolled in the ADRIT session only. Students will be provided with blanks constructed to the instructor’s specifications and will learn to clip, scrape, and adjust reeds throughout the week. Additionally time should be spent on adjusting older reeds and learning how scraping in different areas of the reed affects the sound.
What do we do in this class?
- Get 5 reed blanks and learn to scrape and adjust them
- Learn to adjust your already existing reeds

- Adjusting Only Kit (Kit 6)
- Minimum Requirements Kit (Kit 3)
- Recommended Kit (Kit 1)
- Expanded Tool Kit (Kit 2)
- Or you can select Rental Kit if you don’t want to buy a kit
ADRIT Reed-Making Overview – Oboe
This is the advanced ADRIT reed class for students enrolled in the ADRIT session only.
