Description of classes:

Middle School

Group warm up and songs – a fast paced class where we go through simple through advanced warm ups, and then play songs that exemplify the skills practiced in these warm ups. Everyone plays the whole time.

Music Theory Games / Double Reed Arts and Crafts – simple to intermediate music theory concepts will be explained and drilled with fun Q&A games in a fast-paced and concise class. Emphasis on everyone participating. One of the days this class time will be double reed arts and crafts where students can construct things like: reed case, reed ornaments, decorative items out of old reeds with care package that we have sent to your home.

Ensemble Part Guided Practice – even though it is not practical for us all to play synchronically (at the same time) in the Zoom class, this class will be made up of students learning their individual part for an assigned small ensemble. Everyone practices while on screen and the instructor individually un mutes students one by one for help with their part during this concise practice time. Later the students record their part with a metronome, send it to the director and we mix it together using software and send you the video file for you to share with family and friends.

Student Musical Show and Tell – students get to express themselves and show off something music related to the group. Examples could be: compositions that they have written, songs they have learned or figured out, special artistic designs they may have made, and more. Emphasis on sharing ideas and self expression. We also know that students have been really missing out on social time and this will be a great conversation starter.

Lunch / Optional Social Time – lunch break, but also the students will have the option of staying in the Zoom if they want to socialize and chat with the other students. Gives them additional social time they have been missing out on while they eat their lunches. (Our camp does not provide lunches).

Special Topics – learning more about the oboe or bassoon with these in depth topics like: oboe adjustments, easy bassoon repairs, introduction to tenor clef, demonstration of an English horn or a contrabassoon, how to do vibrato, how to practice effectively and efficiently, and audition preparation / how to be practically and mentally prepared for an audition.

Reed Adjusting – the reed class this year will focus on reed scraping and reed adjusting. We will provide reed blanks (halfway made reeds) that are not clipped. The students will be guided in doing the end stages of the reed, which are actually the most important to causing the reed to play and to play well. Step by step Instruction will also be given on adjusting already existing reeds. Your student CAN learn to do this! These skills will be even more helpful especially at a time when private lesson teachers are not in the same place with your student to be able to adjust reeds – they can learn how to do that themselves with this guidance. No previous reed adjusting or reed making experience required.
