Admission: $40 for soloists/$20 for auditors

Clinicians:  Dr. Jeffrey McCray, Professor of Bassoon at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Martin Schuring, Professor of Oboe at Arizona State University

Purpose: Get to the next level in your all-region performance to gain the edge you need to succeed from top players from around the country Late arrival / early departure is OK. Space is VERY limited for soloists.  Auditor versus soloist: Soloists will perform a selection of one etude for the class and receive a “public” lesson of about 15-20 minutes by the clinician.  Auditors will play when everyone plays, but do not play in front of the group by themselves. Most participants will be auditors, soloist spots are very limited and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.  All participants get to perform when the clinician has everyone play. If you pay for a soloist spot and are assigned an auditor spot, you will receive a partial refund.

Dr. Jeffrey McCray was appointed as Assistant Professor of Bassoon in 2007 after serving as an interim lecturer for the 2006-2007 school year. In addition to bassoon, Dr. McCray also teaches courses in music theory, ear-training, symphonic literature, and chamber music. He performs with the Moran Woodwind Quintet, and frequently leads wind sectionals with the UNL Symphony Orchestra. Dr. McCray is the principal bassoonist of the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, and he is a member of the bassoon section of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic.Dr. McCray holds a bachelor’s degree in bassoon performance and a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University, where he studied with Robert Barris and Victor Yampolsky. Additionally, he studied with Bernard Garfield, former principal bassoon of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and earned a master’s degree in bassoon performance from Temple University. In 2007, Dr. McCray completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Michigan State University, where he studied the bassoon with Michael Kroth. He has served on the faculties of Baylor University, Western Michigan University, Albion College, and the University of Michigan-Flint; has held positions with the symphony orchestras of Battle Creek (MI), Lansing (MI), Waco (TX), Allentown (PA), and Haddonfield (NJ); and has performed extensively with the Grand Rapids (MI) Symphony, Delaware Symphony, Opera Delaware, and the Pennsylvania Ballet.An advocate of contemporary music, Dr. McCray has appeared as both bassoonist and conductor in contemporary music concerts throughout the United States. His 2001 recording of M. William Karlins’ Four Inventions and a Fugue, for bassoon, piano, and female voice (on Hungaroton Records) received praise from numerous critics.Recent solo performances include a 2009 performance of Dan Welcher’s Concerto da Camera for bassoon and small orchestra with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra as well as solo performances with the student ensembles at UNL. Additionally, Dr. McCray regularly performs at the annual conferences of the International Double-Reed Society and gives recitals and masterclasses throughout the Midwest.

Martin Schuring held orchestral positions with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, The Florida Orchestra and the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra prior to joining the ASU faculty in 1992. Since 1980, Schuring has been a regular participant at the Grand Teton Music Festival, playing English horn and oboe in the Festival Orchestra as well as making frequent appearances on the Festival’s chamber music series.

In other summer activities, he has participated in the Bach Aria Festival, served as professor of oboe at the Londrina Music Festival in Brazil, and performed as principal oboe of the Orchestre Philharmonique Rhodanien and professor of oboe at the Academie Europeénne de Musique in Tournon-sur-Rhône, France. Both as soloist and as a member of the reed trio, Ocotillo Winds, Martin Schuring performs at universities and concert venues throughout the United States and abroad. Schuring has recorded for Philips, Koch International, and Summit Records, both as soloist and as an orchestral player. Recently, he recorded the world premiere of Oboe Concerto, Op. 57 by Eric Funk with the Prague Radio Symphony on the MMC label. A CD of reed trio music recorded by the Ocotillo Winds, Rustiques, is available from Summit Records

Martin Schuring has published articles in several journals, including The Double Reed, and Flute Talk. His new edition of the Barret Oboe Method was first published by Kalmus in 2001 with a significantly revised and expanded edition available since 2010. Martin has written the first comprehensive book on oboe playing published in many years, Oboe Art and Method, published by Oxford University Press in 2009. He has performed at every Conference of the International Double Reed Society since 1997, including featured concerto performances at the 2000 conference in Buenos Aires, and the 2001 conference in Morgantown, WV. He holds the office of President of the International Double Reed Society. Together with bassoon colleague Jeffrey Lyman, Martin Schuring hosted the 1998 Conference of the International Double Reed Society at Arizona State University where he is Professor of Oboe. He again co-hosted the 2011 IDRS conference with Albie Micklich. Martin Schuring studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with John de Lancie. He performs on Howarth XL instruments exclusively.
